US 401(k) Rules for Cryptocurrency Investment Entering Final White House Review
A retirement plan investment rule drafted by the US Department of Labor was submitted to the White House for review on November 5th. If implemented, it would make it easier for 401(k) retirement plans to include Bitcoin, other crypto assets, and alternative asset-related products such as private equity and real estate as investment options.
401(k) plans are common employer-sponsored retirement savings plans in the US, similar to China's pension system. In March of this year, the Department of Labor proposed a draft to weaken the review process for investing in cryptocurrencies within 401(k) plans. If adopted, this could mean a significant influx of funds into mainstream (compliant ETF) cryptocurrencies like bitcoin:native.
Currently, the assets under management of 401(k) plans are approximately $10.8 trillion. Even if only 1% of these assets were to enter the crypto asset space, that would amount to $108 billion. This would greatly alleviate the liquidity problem of Bitcoin.
Personally, I feel that passing the review shouldn't be a problem, but the final allocation might be a point of contention for a while. If a allocation of over 1% is achieved, then another bull market for BTC should begin. After all, BTC's total market capitalization is only 1.52 trillion, so 108 billion would be equivalent to 7% of the market capitalization.
