Musk: China's electricity is three times that of the US; when Tesla entered China, officials were so angry they were practically spitting at him!
Wow, this interview is packed with information. Musk not only publicly praised Chinese manufacturing but also recounted Tesla's early days in the Chinese market.
Back then, Chinese officials repeatedly demanded that Tesla find a Chinese joint venture; some even yelled at him, spitting as they spoke.
Musk: We were just a baby company. Babies are too young to get married.
After years of negotiations, China finally relaxed the restrictions, allowing Tesla to build a 100% wholly-owned factory.
Musk said he must maintain firm control over the company's decision-making; otherwise, having to consult with partners on everything would prevent rapid innovation.
He then discussed China's industrial strength.
Musk estimated that China's electricity supply is about three times that of the US and is growing rapidly, potentially reaching four times the size of the US in the future. He also mentioned that China adds approximately 300 GW of installed power capacity annually (this figure was also discussed during the interview).
He believes that industrial capacity is closely linked to electricity supply; whoever has more electricity has greater industrial expansion capabilities. He even bluntly stated that China's auto manufacturing industry is outstanding, citing the performance of the Tesla Model Y in the Chinese market as an example.
Looking at the US, Musk is concerned about chip manufacturing.
Even if all announced US wafer fab projects are calculated under the most optimistic scenario, the US chip manufacturing scale is only about 10% of Asia's. If a serious geopolitical crisis occurs in Asia, the US could face a precipitous drop in chip supply.
Finally, he proposed an extremely bold plan:
Using SpaceX to send AI computing power into space, deploying 1 terawatt of digital superintelligence annually in the future. During the interview, the host also mentioned a SpaceX executive who once said: "The only thing that can stop my grandchildren from speaking Chinese is probably SpaceX."
