800 Kilograms of Gold and Silver Unearthed Outside Meditation Room: Taiwanese Abbot and Son Suspected of Embezzling Donations and Laundering Money with Cryptocurrency
According to Guancha.cn, Zhang Qingyu, the abbot of Donglin Temple in Yilan, Taiwan, and his son Zhang Weifu, who has become a monk, are suspected of embezzling donations from believers. Both have been detained and held incommunicado.
During a search of the temple, investigators unearthed more than ten iron boxes hidden in the rubble outside the meditation room, containing approximately 800 kilograms of gold and silver, with a market value exceeding NT$330 million (approximately RMB 70 million). The investigation revealed that temple funds were first transferred to private accounts and then used to purchase cryptocurrencies and gold and silver to launder the money.
In August of this year, the father and son made a high-profile appearance in court in a Porsche worth approximately NT$5 million, claiming that the donations were voluntary. The case is still under investigation.
