These hackers had an alarmingly high level of patience. Binance was hacked for approximately $6.3 billion, and before they struck, they had been inside Binance for about eight weeks. It all started with a recruitment drive. The hackers, posing as a company hiring, approached a Binance engineer and planted malware on his work computer. The FBI identified the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor as the culprit, but North Korea denied the allegations. This group typically infiltrates other crypto institutions, remaining infiltrated for three to six weeks. At Binance, they stayed for about eight weeks, even using an internal AI tool to gain access to the signature service for approving transfers. On October 29th, the money was gone. Stablecoin issuers can directly freeze their tokens. Within 37 minutes, Tether had frozen 970 million USDT. In total, issuers froze approximately $2.67 billion; including those seized, the amount intercepted represented 44% of the total. Last year, when Bybit was hacked, this percentage was only around 3%. However, BTC and ETH don't have this "switch". There's still about $3.1 billion that hasn't been laundered, mostly in these two cryptocurrencies, and it's very likely still in North Korea's hands. Of this, 18,270 BTC were split into 19 addresses on the day of the theft and haven't been touched since. Those who can wait eight weeks to act probably can afford to wait this long too.
