The US pension plan has taken another step forward in opening up to crypto assets, and the scope may extend beyond just BTC and ETH. 1. The Department of Labor's relevant rules were submitted to the White House for review on November 5th. The official registration stage is for "final rules," but they have not yet taken effect. Previous public proposals did not specify the type of currency or a uniform minimum market capitalization threshold, and altcoins were not excluded outright. 2. However, eligibility for 401(k) plans still requires screening by the retirement plan administrator: performance, fees, liquidity, valuation, benchmarks, and complexity are all assessed. While there are no currency restrictions, this doesn't mean all tokens can be included in retirement fund allocations. BTC and ETH have more mature markets, custody, and products, and may be included earlier. 3. Compared to direct holding of cryptocurrencies, cryptocurrency ETFs and managed funds will likely be included in 401(k) plans before direct holding products because the former are more easily integrated into existing custody and account management systems. I have compiled a list of verified US-listed spot ETFs/ETPs and their issuers as of November 7th. If this plan is approved, it will undoubtedly be a huge boon to the crypto industry and will also drive a new wave of altcoins.
