[Donglin Temple Abbot and Son Suspected of Embezzling Nearly NT$70 Million in Donations, Laundering Money Through Cryptocurrency]
According to Foresight News, citing Sina News, the well-known Donglin Temple in Yilan, Taiwan, has recently been accused of money laundering and embezzling donations. Reports indicate that Abbot Zhang Qingyu and his son, Zhang Weifu, who is now a monk, have been defrauding believers of donations and misappropriating temple assets, totaling NT$300 million (approximately RMB 60.77 million). Furthermore, during a search of the temple, investigators unearthed more than ten iron boxes under rubble outside the meditation rooms, containing nearly 800 kilograms of gold and silver worth over NT$330 million (approximately RMB 67.24 million). The Zhang family also allegedly transferred donations and temple property to their private accounts and even concealed their illicit gains by purchasing cryptocurrencies, gold and silver, and farmhouses near the temple.
On Tuesday (November 3), the Yilan District Court ordered the detention and prohibition of visits by Chang Ching-yu and his son Chang Wei-fu on suspicion of misappropriation of public funds and violation of the Money Laundering Prevention Act. Chang Ching-cheng, the executive director of the Donglin Temple Dharma Protection Association, and Lin Chia-chen, Chang Ching-yu's wife who served as the temple's treasurer, were each granted bail of NT$1 million (approximately RMB 200,000) pending trial.
