The Democrats' move to halt new data center construction is essentially a power reshuffle and a redistribution of interests, but it involves not only the two parties but also a power struggle between residents and large corporations.
In Texas, for example, Hinojosa's official stance is to suspend new projects until the state legislature establishes resident protection measures and re-examines tax incentives; it does not propose permanently closing all data centers.
Furthermore, as early as September 21st, Republican Governor Abbott effectively ordered a suspension of related permits pending audits and required projects to bear the costs of electricity infrastructure.
Therefore, this change, leveraging the midterm elections, has effectively halted the previous trend of public resentment towards the government sacrificing the interests of the grassroots and crowding out resources to subsidize corporate expansion. In the future, data centers will have to pay more for grid upgrades, more expensive water, and higher taxes.
This further increases the operating costs of data centers that previously expanded through corporate bond issuance. Coupled with already high financing costs and the inability of terminal revenue to cover costs, this led to a panic-driven stock price collapse due to expectations of a broken cash flow.
Moreover, even a temporary halt to the construction of computing centers will have a significant impact, as Changxin is catching up rapidly: its sixth-generation platform has completed engineering sample verification, and it is expected to send samples of its first-generation 4F² DDR5 RDIMM product by the end of the year; its HBM3E is already in small-batch production. The US's halt during this crucial catch-up period undoubtedly provides competitors with an excellent opportunity to overtake, further compressing the future profit expectations of US and Korean memory manufacturers.
Therefore, considering all factors, I will likely wait for a sentiment-driven oversold rebound before exiting my SanDisk holdings, which could minimize or even eliminate losses. However, until the two parties reach a consensus, long-term holding may not be suitable.
