[Goldman Sachs Raises US Data Center Construction Forecast Against Market Trend: Spending Expected to Reach $125 Billion in 2028]
BlockBeats reported on November 7th that despite market panic caused by stricter data center regulations following the Democratic Party's victory in Congress, Goldman Sachs raised its US data center construction spending forecast. The 2026 forecast was increased from $67 billion to $80 billion, and the 2027 forecast was revised upwards from $87 billion to $100 billion. For the first time, Goldman Sachs projected that spending would reach $125 billion in 2028.
Goldman Sachs pointed out that there are currently approximately 86GW of data center projects under construction in the US, with another approximately $900 billion in high-credibility projects awaiting construction, indicating that the overall construction cycle remains resilient. Demand and backlogged orders from hyperscale cloud service providers such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have not shown significant signs of cooling. H100 computing power leasing prices have increased by 26% year-on-year, and GB200 leasing prices have increased by 50% year-to-date.
Goldman Sachs believes that the data center suspension order issued by Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa will have a greater impact than outright cancellation of construction plans, but may lead to increased financing costs, reduced tax breaks, and contract cancellations by some clients.
Goldman Sachs also warns that the overall growth outlook for the industry needs to be distinguished from the viability of individual developers. Highly leveraged data center developers may face severe financial pressure due to project delays and increased financing costs, and some companies may not even be able to survive until the projects are operational.
