Laura Shin Infiltrates Crypto Recruitment: Suspected North Korean Developer's Call Ends After Being Asked About Kim Jong-un
On August 14th, Laura Shin (@laurashin), founder and CEO of Unchained, using the pseudonym Sophie Wang, interviewed a suspected North Korean crypto developer applying for a job at Oomp-Labs. Security researchers had previously obtained the applicant's GitHub profile, work experience, and discovered links between his wallet transactions and those related to North Korea.
During the interview, Shin asked the applicant to make a negative comment about Kim Jong-un. The applicant hesitated, and the call ended. Nine minutes later, Shin suggested switching to Discord or Telegram due to network instability. After switching to Telegram, Shin made the same request again. The applicant initially claimed to "not know much" about the topic, then stated he had never encountered such an interview question before, and never gave a direct answer. Shin urged crypto companies to strengthen identity verification during recruitment.
