"So what do you do?" asked the new acquaintance who'd sat down at my table, while I spoke some of my first words after my 10-days silent retreat.
I mentioned that I teach breathwork, coach people, and run an infrastructure investment fund.
He wanted to know more about the third, so I explained how we funded bitcoin mining operations that used landfills gas as their power source.
"You must have significant capital reserves in order to do that" he replied.
I smiled "Actually, no. You don't need that. I have access to a wealth that is more important. I understand how to help people see the legitimate value of an idea without spin, so they can see how it serves them to be involved."
I explained how I didn't always possess this wealth, it was something that I acquired through a combination of life circumstances and mentors, and that this was part of what I now coached others in, who were doing things in the world I believed in.
Sometimes I have to pinch myself, as the kid from a small isolated rural community, who throughout most of school was too shy to talk to other kids, let alone influence at high level
There was one year when I
- helped a Polish innovator win a $700M pitch to India's transport minister to have Personal Rapid Transit be adopted by India
- Helped an architecture firm who'd lost 4 pitches in a row win their next $10M pitch to rebuild a hospital
- Help a Research Organization win a 4th $40M government contract (the rules said you only get 3)
More recently, this work has involved helping Bitcoin win high stakes meetings including securing capital from Tim Draper and EgoDeath.
I'm working currently with 7 Bitcoiner who are influencing monetary policy and energy policy through conversations with Prime ministers, energy ministers, central bankers, policymakers and energy ministers.
But you know what?
That is not where the real impact happens. These "results" are nice-to-haves, and reasonably straightforward to engineer once you understand the science of it, as I do. But they are not that important.
What is important is the question "Am I free?"
If you need some external project in the world to "succeed" because you think you need that to be happy, you will be unhappy, whether your project succeeds of fails.
True impact happens only when you content, unattached to the fruits of your actions, and focused on what you can give (from a full cup), not what you can get.
Once you have that, you have true wealth. From there, it doesn't matter whether you want to change a nation's direction or be a present parent: both are equally important
Next year I'm spending more time growing CH4Capital, so I have space to coach one more person
If you value truly impact, if you're ready to drop attachments and beliefs that no longer serve you, and you're ready to serve others from a full cup, reach out
