[US 401(k) Proposal Does Not Set Digital Asset Market Value Threshold; Experts Predict Crypto Options Will Emerge Starting in 2027]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that the US Department of Labor's proposal does not specify which digital assets can be included in retirement plans, nor does it set a minimum market value threshold. It requires plan administrators to consider investment performance, fees, liquidity, valuation, benchmarks, and complexity. Experts say smaller market capitalization tokens may face greater challenges due to limited historical data, insufficient liquidity, and other risks.
Teresa Goody Guillén, Managing Partner of Bellementis PLLC, stated that Bitcoin and Ethereum may be included in 401(k) plans first, but market capitalization is not the deciding factor; plan administrators still need to demonstrate prudent investment choices. She predicts that ETFs and managed funds may launch before direct holding of crypto assets.
Bernardo Brites, co-founder and CEO of Trace Finance, predicts that crypto investment options may begin to emerge in 2027, followed by ETFs from large employers, and wider availability in retirement funds by 2028. He stated that existing brokerage channels may precede this, while legal uncertainties and factors such as custody and record-keeping systems may slow the process. (Cointelegraph)
