[Paraguayan Senate Rejects President's Request for Extension of Impeachment Defense Preparation Time] According to a report by Decrypt on November 7th, the Paraguayan Senate rejected President Santiago Peña's request for an additional 72 hours to prepare his impeachment defense. The Senate was originally scheduled to vote on his removal on Friday evening local time.
Amid protests sparked by the Ueno Bank crisis, Peña had previously submitted his resignation, but the joint congressional session convened to accept it adjourned due to a lack of quorum. He subsequently stated that he would face impeachment and defend himself. The House of Representatives had previously initiated impeachment proceedings by a vote of 78 to 0.
The report also stated that the Minister of the Interior and the Governor of the Central Bank have resigned, and eight Ueno executives have been arrested; prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into whether Peña bears responsibility for the bank's misconduct, which Peña denies.
