Will the Democrats suppress cryptocurrencies if they win both houses of Congress?
Many people have been worried that Democratic control of Congress will restrict the development of cryptocurrencies. While there are indeed some Democrats who don't support cryptocurrencies (just as there are those who don't support AI), there are also many who do support the crypto industry, as seen in previous congressional votes.
In July 2025, the House of Representatives passed the CLARITY Act, a cryptocurrency market structure bill, with 294 votes in favor and 134 against. 78 Democratic senators voted in favor. In June of the same year, the GENIUS Act, a stablecoin bill, passed the Senate with 68 votes in favor and 30 against, with 18 Democratic senators voting in favor.
In this midterm election, according to statistics from the crypto initiative Stand With Crypto, 245 candidates rated as pro-cryptocurrencies have been elected, including 226 in the House and 19 in the Senate, representing Democrats and Republicans respectively.
Of course, there are also Democrats like Warren and Waters who advocate for stronger regulation. However, this opposition from some lawmakers stems more from Trump's prerogative regarding cryptocurrency, rather than from a complete rejection of cryptocurrencies.
Overall, the existence of both supporters and advocates for stronger regulation in the cryptocurrency industry is not inherently bad. Better regulation makes the environment safer, and actions like Trump's, using cryptocurrency as a personal or even family ATM, certainly warrant regulation.
