Is Masayoshi Son, the AI leverage enthusiast, about to stumble? Just after the Democratic Party's return to the spotlight triggered a semiconductor panic, media reports revealed that a mysterious seller is auctioning off over a dozen data center loans. One of these loans is a joint project between OpenAI and SoftBank. Elon Musk directly accused Son's SoftBank of defaulting on its turbine orders. SoftBank, which previously poured money into OpenAI and partnered with OpenAI and Oracle on massive AI data centers, ordered a large number of gas turbines to generate electricity to address the high power consumption of data centers. Now, due to the rapid cooling of data center projects, SoftBank may have already defaulted on its orders due to its inability to make subsequent payments. Simultaneously, banks are also urgently selling off data center-related loans, including the one involving SoftBank. This indicates that some are beginning to worry that these projects will not be successfully built, or even profitable. To support OpenAI, SoftBank has used large-scale bridge loans, arranged a $40 billion loan, and used ARM stock as collateral for financing, thus facing leverage pressure.
