OpenAI renames its data centers "Compute Campuses" in an attempt to quell opposition across the country.
OpenAI today released its "National Community Covenant" and "Compute Campus Policy Blueprint," renaming its AI data centers "Compute Campuses."
This renaming comes against the backdrop of growing opposition from voters of both parties in the US to data centers, who are concerned about rising electricity costs and excessive water usage.
OpenAI has pledged that each of its self-built and self-operated campuses will have its own separate community covenant: soliciting residents' opinions during construction and operation, creating high-paying local jobs, protecting shared resources, and supporting small businesses.
This plan was developed by OpenAI's Global Affairs Head Chris Lehane's team starting in August and was deliberately scheduled for release after the midterm elections.
Just after the elections, Texas's Democratic-elect Governor Ernesto Inojosa stated that he would halt data center construction until measures to protect public safety were found.
