[Walleye to Lay Off Large Numbers of Equity Long/Short Teams and Return Part of Capital] According to a letter to investors from Walleye Capital on November 6th, the hedge fund will streamline its internal equity long/short business, replacing its leadership and a significant portion of the investment team. It also plans to return a portion of capital to investors; the specific amount, timing, and method will be announced separately.
Walleye suffered a 5.9% loss in October, its worst monthly performance since March 2020. The company stated that its internal equity long/short business has performed the weakest since 2023, and it will focus more on volatility, quantitative, and external management strategies going forward, while retaining equity investments through external managers and high-confidence internal managers.
The financial research community Special Situations also reported that Axebrook, Engineers Gate, Lone Pine, Millennium, and Verition internal teams, as well as Samlyn, experienced liquidation, large-scale redemptions, or team adjustments this week. Some of these reports have not been officially confirmed and should not be considered as confirmation that all related funds have been liquidated.
