Why did US stocks plummet after opening on Thursday? Wasn't the midterm election supposed to be a positive factor? Why did Bitcoin also fall?
I've been writing this since last night, and less than an hour later, there's been a huge drop. Bitcoin has already fallen by over 6%. In this situation, the culprit is most likely the US stock market itself. Sure enough, Nvidia, AMD, and data center-related stocks are all falling—in other words, tech stocks and AI stocks are all declining.
The main reason is the Democratic victory. Wait, wasn't a Democratic victory supposed to be good news? You said it was good news yesterday, so why is it bad news today? You're saying all the good and bad things!
Don't argue yet, here's the logic:
Yesterday, the Democrats won, controlling Congress, especially with Senate Majority Leader Schumer stating he wanted to end the war between the US and Iran. This positive news did indeed drive the market up, even bitcoin:native, that's true.
But as some friends said yesterday, isn't this good news? Why are tech stocks falling? The reasons for the decline yesterday and today are the same: increased uncertainty surrounding data center construction.
The Democrats won in states like Texas and Georgia, where data center construction is concentrated. Some residents in these areas had previously opposed data center expansion, fearing increased electricity, water, and electricity costs. Investors are worried that some projects may face stricter approvals or be suspended. If data center construction slows, order growth for chip, server, and computing power suppliers could also be affected.
In simpler terms, the Democrats aren't as aggressive, so in their key Democratic-held states, they may have reduced support for AI data centers to secure votes. Furthermore, the market was already concerned about increased capital expenditure due to AI expansion, leading to investor anxiety and a sell-off in tech stocks.
This is the first main reason. Secondly, oil prices have started to rebound. The market bought on sentiment yesterday, and sold off today as that sentiment has been realized. So, when I saw oil prices rebound this morning, I immediately closed my short positions. Without considering funding costs, it was a small profit; with funding costs, it's still a loss. But I feel that as long as there are clear signals from Iran, I can continue shorting.
Last July, because I thought it could fall further, I went from an 80% profit to a loss of over 100%, plus the headache of funding costs. So this time, I'm even more decisive.
As for bitcoin:native, I was wrong again. Although I knew AI would fall and oil prices rose, that was already the case during the day. But BTC didn't move much during the day, so I thought BTC was fine. As a result, I bought in to buy the dip, and this is what happened. But I think buying now won't be a big problem. While I continue shorting oil, the price of BTC should recover.
But for AI and semiconductors, my advice to everyone is not to rush into buying the dip.
