[FATF Report: Virtual Assets Have Become a Major Money Laundering Channel in Scam Parks, Calls for Enhanced Cross-Border Tracking and Fund Freezing]
Foresight News reports that the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has released a report on combating illicit fund flows related to scam parks, pointing out that virtual assets have become a significant money laundering channel for such crimes. Some scam parks even have dedicated over-the-counter (OTC) trading desks to facilitate virtual asset exchange and domestic fund transfers.
The report discloses that in one case, blockchain analysis revealed that a cluster of virtual asset wallets belonging to a scam park received over $100 million in funds from victims, tracing the funds through a money laundering network to cash-out stages. Another case shows that a concentrated operation by the U.S. Interagency Fraud Center Task Force resulted in the voluntary freezing of over $3.8 million in virtual assets.
The FATF calls on countries to integrate fund tracking, freezing, and recovery with anti-fraud infrastructure, strengthen information sharing among financial institutions, technology companies, telecommunications operators, and law enforcement agencies, and emphasizes that the first 24 to 72 hours after discovering or receiving a report of fraud are a critical window for freezing funds, recovering assets, and preventing further losses.
