[South Korean Stocks Trigger Double Circuit Breaker as US Midterm Election Aftershocks Continue to Impact Global Markets] According to Jinse Finance, on November 5th, South Korean stocks plummeted due to concerns about tightened regulations on AI data centers triggered by the US midterm election results. Both the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) and the Korea Oscillator (KOSDAQ) triggered market stabilization mechanisms on the same day, with semiconductor and AI infrastructure-related stocks suffering heavy losses.
At the close, the KOSPI fell 5.28% to 5383.8 points, while the KOSDAQ index dropped 5.11%. Among individual stocks, SK Hynix fell 9.46%, and Samsung Electronics fell 7.57%.
Market concerns exist that the Democratic Party's major victory in the US midterm elections may lead to stricter regulations on data center approvals, grid connection, and electricity costs, causing delays in some AI data center projects. This could impact the capital expenditure plans of hyperscale cloud service providers and lower demand expectations for memory chips such as HBM and DRAM. Some analysts point out that delays in data center construction may postpone the realization of cloud revenue for large technology companies and increase the financing pressure on highly leveraged AI infrastructure companies. However, some argue that even if the Democrats control Congress, they will find it difficult to easily change the overall direction of AI investment in the United States, and the actual impact may be limited.
