Options—once a derivative unfamiliar to most, have now become an essential skill for qualified traders. However, their professional and complex concepts deter many aspiring learners.
Contracts only offer two options: "long" and "short," while options offer four: buying a call, buying a put, selling a call, and selling a put. Add to that strike price, expiration date, premium, and so on, and it can be quite confusing...
OKX's recent launch of "Simplified Options," with only six tokenized stock underlyings, is a significant step. It's an attempt to break down barriers and lower the entry threshold.
In fact, options possess advantages and characteristics that contracts lack.
We can simply translate the four directions as: corresponding to four needs: "participating in an upward trend, protecting against a downward trend, increasing holdings, and planning to buy."
For example:
I believe MSTR has higher price elasticity than BTC, but the current price is high, so I want to wait for a correction before buying.
Suppose xMSTR is currently priced at $150, and I want to buy it at $130. I can sell a put option with a strike price of $130.
If, by expiration, the price hasn't fallen to $130, I collect the premium (rent from the buyer); if it falls to or even lower than $130, I buy xMSTR at $130, and the premium I receive offsets part of the cost.
Therefore, I translate "sell put" as fulfilling the need for a planned purchase. The other three approaches are similar and can even be combined:
For example, selling a call option while holding a position increases income; buying a put option when worried about a price drop insures the position. Combining different tools allows for more proactive risk management.
Interested readers are encouraged to explore this further; I believe it will offer unique insights!
Of course, simpler operations don't mean the risk has disappeared.
The truly valuable progress lies in learning to manage our positions using tools, not just betting on price movements.
