On November 4th, OpenAI released a security research report stating that it used a previously unreleased next-generation cybersecurity AI model to conduct automated vulnerability scanning of the Linux kernel. The report identified 2,308 potential security issues, successfully reproduced 1,724 vulnerabilities, and generated effective exploits for 948 different local privilege escalation vulnerabilities, allowing attackers with low-privilege access to gain root privileges. The entire test consumed approximately $1.21 million in API credits, averaging about $1,279 per exploit. OpenAI also generated candidate patches and is collaborating with Linux maintainers to advance the fixes. Given Linux's widespread use in cryptocurrency exchanges, blockchain nodes, and other infrastructure, this research has raised concerns about the security of systems in the crypto industry. However, there is currently no evidence that these vulnerabilities have been used to attack crypto platforms.
