[Zcash NU7 Upgrade Countdown: Over $16 Million in Sprout Anonymous Pool Faces Permanent Lock-up Risk] According to Jinse Finance, on November 5th, market sources reported that the Zcash NU7 network upgrade (expected to take effect around 9:30 PM Eastern Time on November 5th) will permanently render approximately 12,226 ZEC (worth about $16 million at $1,300/ZEC) in the 2016 Sprout privacy pool permanently unspendable.
Holders have only a few hours left to migrate; about 10,000 ZEC were urgently transferred out last week, but by Wednesday the number had plummeted to about 40.
This upgrade will eliminate outdated transaction formats to reduce complexity and security risks, while also reducing block time from 75 seconds to a target of 25 seconds. The remaining locked coins are still in the total supply, but whether access can be restored is uncertain.
This is a positive catalyst for the Zcash codebase; however, it is a clear warning sign for older coins in privacy pools that have been lost or dormant for many years.
