[Bank of Japan's September Minutes Release Hawkish Signals; Some Members Advocate Accelerated Rate Hikes] Golden Finance reports that discussions about further tightening monetary policy by the Bank of Japan (BOJ) are intensifying on November 5th. The newly released meeting minutes show that some policymakers believe the BOJ should consider accelerating the pace of interest rate hikes to prevent prices from continuing to exceed expectations, as Japan's core inflation gradually approaches the 2% policy target.
The minutes of the BOJ's September monetary policy meeting, released on Thursday, show that several members agreed on the necessity of continuing to raise interest rates. One member explicitly stated that if there are signs of prices rising more than expected, the pace of rate hikes should be accelerated.
At its meeting on September 17-18, the BOJ raised the policy rate from 1% to 1.25%, the highest level in 31 years. This is the BOJ's first rate hike in three months, a faster pace than the previous roughly six-month adjustment period.
