[OpenAI Acquires Pierre, Codex Starts to Take Business from GitHub] Beating AI News: OpenAI announced the acquisition of developer tools startup Pierre Computer, preparing to integrate code hosting functionality into Codex. Previously, Codex primarily helped developers write and modify code; now, OpenAI also wants to take over code storage and management, directly competing with Microsoft's GitHub. Pierre's two open-source tools, Trees and Diffs, are already used in Codex, responsible for browsing project files and checking code changes, respectively. OpenAI is also eyeing Pierre's commercial code hosting service, Code Storage. Code Storage can save code, record modification history, and provides an API that allows AI agents to directly create and manage code repositories, supporting multiple agents operating simultaneously. Currently, AI programming products such as Lovable, Bolt, and Amp are already using it. OpenAI is also transforming its own code management system. On November 2nd, OpenAI announced its self-developed Pando, specifically designed to address performance issues when a large number of agents are simultaneously writing code and submitting changes. Pando is already in use within OpenAI, reducing median code push latency by nearly 80%. Following the acquisition, OpenAI will gradually integrate Code Storage into Codex. Pierre's existing open-source projects will remain open source. [Original Link]
