[Bitcoin Developers Push Forward BIP-54 Soft Fork to Fix Four Consensus Rule Vulnerabilities] According to CryptoBriefing, the next major Bitcoin protocol upgrade may be a "Big Consensus Cleanup" soft fork called BIP-54, designed to fix four vulnerabilities in the network's consensus rules that have existed since the protocol's inception in 2009. The proposal addresses time warp attacks, "poisonous" blocks requiring long verification times, a 64-byte transaction vulnerability in the Merkle tree, and the replay risk from duplicate coinbase transactions. BIP-54 was first drafted by developer Matt Corallo in March 2019 and officially received its BIP number in April 2025. Test vectors were merged at the end of 2025, and testing began on the Bitcoin Inquisition Signet network in February 2026.
