Miners have become landlords too.
Riot, a US-listed Bitcoin mining company, leased its entire Corsicana, Texas campus to an unnamed AI lab for 15 years, with an initial contract value of approximately $28 billion. Its total revenue last quarter was only $181 million, making this contract over 150 times larger.
However, its core business of mining wasn't as lucrative in its earnings report released on the same day: while coin mining in the third quarter increased by 16% compared to last year, mining revenue decreased by 28%. The company's net profit also dropped from $104.5 million in the same period last year to $4.03 million.
What truly surprised me was its investment.
In the first three quarters of this year, it sold 20,264 BTC, cashing out approximately $1.5 billion, primarily to build data centers. By the end of September, it only had 2,418 BTC left, meaning it sold more than eight times its remaining amount.
Previously, when I heard miners selling cryptocurrency, my first thought was always about paying electricity bills. Riot, however, is selling tokens to build data centers for its AI.
They're selling over 20,000 tokens to build data centers while simultaneously signing a 15-year, $28 billion lease.
Mining only generates $116 million in revenue per quarter; at this rate, this lease would last for 60 years.
