Riot Platforms, the second-largest publicly listed Bitcoin miner, sold 𝟭𝟬,𝟱𝟵𝟵 𝗕𝗧𝗖 in Q3 — cutting its treasury 𝟳𝟵% from 11,380 to 2,418 BTC. Year-to-date sales total 𝟮𝟬,𝟮𝟲𝟰 𝗕𝗧𝗖 (~$1.5B), primarily funding data center construction. Q3 mining revenue fell 28% YoY to $116M while total revenue edged up 1% to $181M. Riot also signed a 15-year, 910 MW AI data center lease worth ~$28B initially.
𝗛𝘂𝗽𝘇𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: A near-80% treasury liquidation by a major public BTC miner is structural sell pressure on the order of $1.5B year-to-date. The pivot to AI data center leases ($38B contracted) signals Riot redirecting capital away from mining. The Q3 selling has likely cleared, but the scale shows how aggressively miners are monetizing holdings to fund infrastructure pivots.
BTC — the $1.5B YTD miner selling is structural supply already absorbed by the market. Watch for residual distribution pressure if Riot continues monetizing the remaining 2,418 BTC treasury into Q4.
