Recent hacking incidents may strengthen the demand for privacy coins:
1. Binance suffered a loss of approximately $6.34 billion, Brazilian exchange Mercado Bitcoin suffered a loss of over $40 million, and French banking group Crédit Mutuel Arkéa suffered a loss of over $133 million. The hackers at the latter exchanged the money for stablecoins and ETH, ultimately transferring it to Monero.
2. Privacy coins have shown significant strength recently. ZEC rose above $1200, returning to the top ten in market capitalization, while XMR hovered around $630. This may include buying activity intended for money laundering by hackers.
3. This is a two-sided issue—privacy technology can also be used to prevent hacking: Since holdings, trading counterparties, and fund flows are no longer publicly disclosed on the blockchain, it becomes much more difficult for hackers to target specific institutions and individuals before gradually gaining access, as was the case in this case.
