[Canadian Court Orders Return of Bitcoin Wallet to Murderer's Family] According to a report by Decrypt on November 4th, TechFlow reported that Nova Scotia Supreme Court Judge John Bodurtha ruled to return a laptop containing a Bitcoin wallet to the family of William Sandeson, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Sandeson murdered Dalhousie University student Taylor Samson in 2015. The prosecution failed to prove that the Bitcoin in question was related to the murder, drug trafficking, or proceeds of crime, therefore the court ruled there was no grounds to continue holding the wallet.
The value of the Bitcoin wallet is highly disputed. Sandeson claims it is worth approximately CAD 8,000 to CAD 10,000, while Samson's family lawyers previously estimated its value to be over CAD 200,000. The court also ruled that CAD 5,000 in cash found in Sandeson's apartment after the murder is crime-related property and will not be returned.
