[OpenAI Unveils Enhanced Engineering Model: CAD BenchCAD Score of 0.875, Significantly Surpassing Astra] Beating AI News: OpenAI has unveiled an unreleased internal model. In the BenchCAD 2.0 engineering design benchmark, it achieved an average score of 0.875, significantly surpassing Astra's highest inference score of 0.594, representing an improvement of approximately 47%. The model's name and release date have not yet been announced. BenchCAD 2.0 primarily tests an AI's ability to reconstruct 3D parts from blueprints, assemble mechanical structures, and identify circuit connections. Astra previously ranked first in public benchmarks but has made a basic error: misidentifying the 3.3V, 5V, and ground wires on a circuit board as the same network. Such errors, if incorporated into actual circuit design, could directly lead to hardware failure. OpenAI also showcased Astra's device-building experiment. Two employees designed a physical device capable of interacting with Codex via voice in less than a week. Astra completed the design of the casing, internal structure, circuit board, and software. However, multiple rounds of manual review and adjustments are still required during actual production. The contract manufacturer took nearly a month to produce the first batch of prototypes. OpenAI is also collaborating with the racing team Chip Ganassi Racing to convert 3D scans of parts into editable CAD models and manufacturing drawings; and with Mazda to explore ways to reduce drag in car design by adjusting the front end styling and simulating airflow.
