[Analysis: Fortuneo, the French online bank, suffered a fraudulent attack that may have resulted in losses far exceeding $133 million, with funds laundered through crypto channels] BlockBeats reported on November 4th that crypto journalist Grégory Raymond stated that Fortuneo, the online bank of the French mutual credit group Credit Mutuel Arkea, was attacked by a fraudulent cyberattack on November 1st. Combining new sources and on-chain analysis, the fund flow can be gradually reconstructed, and the on-chain visible amount may be far greater than the previously announced approximately $133 million. The fraudsters were able to initiate transfers from Fortuneo and set the recipient's name themselves, essentially allowing them to send funds to any account globally under their chosen name. Sources close to the hacker community lean towards an internal human error rather than a long-term, insidious intrusion into the payment system. Analysts believe this attack may be a variant of the "CEO scam" perpetrated by French-speaking networks, where impersonating executives to induce employees to cooperate. Raymond stated that during the same period, someone opened accounts on trading platforms like Kraken using a forged identity sufficient to pass KYC. Fortuneo's transfers were made to these accounts under the verified names, indicating that the bank's account on the platform was not stolen. After the fiat currency arrived, it was converted into stablecoins and then withdrawn. Bitquery tracked withdrawals from Kraken and Crypto.com, with the earliest transaction occurring at 12:25 UTC on November 1st, followed by another withdrawal from Kraken approximately 44 minutes later. Chain detective ZachXBT initially estimated over $106 million in USDC and USDT withdrawals, later revising it to over $133 million. Between November 1st and the night of November 2nd, approximately $63 million worth of stablecoins were exchanged for 27,553 ETH via Uniswap, and then partially converted into Monero through instant exchange and cross-chain channels. The French mutual credit group, Achia, has not yet officially announced any such activity, but off-chain cashing and over-the-counter transactions may mean even higher total losses. [Original Link]
