Most of the stolen BTC has been recovered; approximately 94,000 BTC (nearly 80% of the total stolen amount) were seized by the US government and are in the process of being returned to Bitfinex.
In August 2016, Bitfinex was robbed of approximately 119,754 BTC (worth approximately $71 million at the time). In February 2022, US law enforcement seized approximately 94,000 BTC (worth approximately $3.6 billion at the time) from wallets associated with Ilya Lichtenstein, marking the largest seizure of financial assets in US history at the time. Cash, gold, and other crypto assets were subsequently recovered, with a combined estimated value of approximately $10 billion at the time of sentencing.
In 2025, the court ruled that approximately 94,643 BTC should be returned to Bitfinex in kind as compensation. As of October 2026, US government-related wallets had begun transferring some funds (approximately 12,267 BTC) to relevant addresses according to court orders. These funds were intended for the redemption of Bitfinex's Recovery Right Token and subsequent arrangements, rather than for market dumping. An additional 20,000 BTC were successfully laundered or converted earlier and could not be fully recovered in their original form.
Overall, this is one of the large-scale thefts with a relatively high recovery rate in the crypto space, primarily due to the traceability of blockchain technology and law enforcement's access to private key files. The remaining unrecovered portion remains difficult to locate completely.
