I've seen bosses give out red envelopes (cash gifts) all the time, but giving one share of their company's stock to 2 million unsuspecting children is a first for me. The giver is SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and her husband. They donated over 2 million shares, depositing them into the Trump accounts of American children in December, one share per child. This is an investment account opened by the US government for minors. SpaceX went public in June this year, ticker symbol SPCX, with a latest closing price of $141.31. This donation is worth approximately $280 million. Who receives the shares depends solely on where they live: children born between 2009 and 2015 whose median household income in their zip code is below $57,000 are eligible, regardless of their actual family income. However, while the children can access the $141, they can't actually spend it. Even if they sell it after the holding period, the money can't be withdrawn; it can only remain in the account and be used to buy index funds. And this is just the appetizer. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said last month that he plans to give every American child one share of the company by 2027. An American child's first stock might just be in rocket manufacturing.
