September JOLTS came in with job openings up to 7.5M from 7.2M in August (revised), and the openings rate ticked up to 4.5%. Hires landed at 5.4M and quits climbed to 3.4M, while layoffs held around 1.6M at a 1.0% rate, so people are still leaving jobs on their own without employers cutting much. A labor market this steady probably keeps the Fed focused on inflation, which means rate hike talk for December is likely sticking around. Source: BLS, Image from Reuters.
