How should we evaluate this incident?
Is this a record-breaking financial heist?
This is not only a disaster for Binance, but also a $6 billion public lesson in security for the entire industry.
This $6 billion lesson exposes the cruelest truth about the entire crypto industry:
Cryptography itself is flawless, but the people and systems that operate it are riddled with holes.
Fake interviews and phishing are "human vulnerabilities," while unauthorized access by internal AI tools and the failure of signature-based risk control are "systemic vulnerabilities."
But what's frightening isn't this theft itself, but that even after patching old systemic vulnerabilities, new vulnerabilities will emerge with the advent of new technologies;
And the vulnerabilities of "humans," from Web2 to Web3, have never changed and will continue to recur.
All Ponzi schemes and exchanges should take a good look in the mirror.
This isn't the first time Binance has been hacked, and it certainly won't be the last.
