While filming The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), director Randall Wallace wanted Philippe’s mask removal scene to reveal a man who looked as though he had spent years in captivity. To make the moment convincing, Leonardo DiCaprio was given three weeks to grow as much facial hair as possible. Unfortunately, the young actor could only manage a few patches on his chin and what the crew jokingly called a “puberty moustache.” Since it was nowhere near the thick, unkempt beard the scene required, the makeup team stepped in with a creative solution. They carefully applied artificial facial hair, blending it with DiCaprio’s natural growth to create the illusion of years spent behind the iron mask. The result was so convincing that most viewers never noticed the beard was largely fake.
