Another indicator for real-time inflation monitoring is the Bloomberg Price Project (BPP), which uses alternative data to construct the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI). The BPP covers 87% of the CPI basket, encompassing both goods and services: collecting millions of price data points from credit card transactions, e-commerce websites, grocery stores, pharmacies, rental listings, business data, Bloomberg terminal market prices, and government records. Moreover, it goes deeper than the official CPI data, breaking down the CPI basket into nearly 700 sub-items, compared to approximately 200 in the official data. Thanks to the efforts of several economists and researchers at Bloomberg: Anna Wong, Durie, Daniel Ripperger-Suhler, Joshua Danial, and Scott Johnson.
