Another nine-figure sum has been stolen, and this time the perpetrator remains unknown.
The Binance $6 billion heist is still ongoing, and on-chain investigator ZachXBT has issued another alert: an unnamed EU institution had $106 million withdrawn from accounts across several exchanges on Sunday.
The money was withdrawn in USDC and USDT. The perpetrator clearly knew that the issuers of these two stablecoins could directly freeze them.
So, over the next 24 hours, he was constantly exchanging: first USDC for ETH, then through several instant exchange platforms with minimal identity verification, crossing multiple blockchains, and finally converting a portion into Monero (XMR). Monero transfers are unpredictable; once the money is in, the trail essentially goes cold.
A few days ago, following the Binance incident, Tether froze the stolen USDT on Ethereum in just 37 minutes, and Circle froze all of the stolen $823 million in USDC. Together, these two companies locked up over 40% of the stolen funds. This time, the perpetrators never intended for the stablecoins to remain in their hands for long.
What's most intriguing is ZachXBT's statement: he was very confident that this wasn't the work of North Korea's Lazarus.
The FBI has already identified North Korean hackers in the Binance incident. This time, with over $100 million stolen, the culprit is still unknown.
