[YC CEO Garry Tan: Spending $100,000 to $200,000 Annually on AI Agent Tokens] According to a TechCrunch report on November 3rd, Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan revealed on Walter Isaacson's podcast "The Builders" that he spends approximately $100,000 to $200,000 annually on AI agent tokens.
Tan stated that his AI agent has read all his emails, Dropbox, and Apple Notes, including therapy notes from 20 years ago. He has also publicly released gstack, a toolset containing 23 Claude Code skills, on GitHub. YC also internally uses an AI agent called Stray Light, which has contextual knowledge of all founders funded by YC, their email correspondence, and application materials.
Tan believes that for personal AI agents to become mainstream, costs must decrease, and described his spending as a "privilege not everyone can have." He also envisions a future where users control and program their own personal AI, rather than being controlled by large tech companies.
