North Korea has solemnly denied the FBI's accusations regarding the Binance hack, but this is not the first time.
During the WannaCry incident in 2017, North Korea also denied involvement, calling the US accusations a political provocation.
In February 2022, the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs publicly addressed a Chainalysis report alleging that North Korean hackers stole approximately $400 million in cryptocurrency assets in 2021, stating that the US accusations of cryptocurrency theft were fabricated.
When Bybit suffered a $1.5 billion theft in February 2025, and the FBI pointed the finger at North Korean TraderTraitor, North Korean state media did not even respond at the time.
In May 2026, the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs again issued a statement through the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), broadly denying accusations of international cybercrime and cryptocurrency theft, claiming that the so-called North Korean cyber threat simply does not exist.
What's different about the Binance hack is that Kim Jong-un's sister, Kim Yo-jong, personally intervened.
She directly called the FBI's attribution of the Binance case a serious political provocation, accusing the US of repeatedly linking global cybercrime to North Korea.
This is no longer just a routine response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, but rather a public statement from a high-ranking party official regarding a specific case.
