[New York Times and Other Publishers Sue Brave, Alleging Unauthorized Content Scraping for AI Use] According to a report by The Verge on November 3rd, The New York Times and other publishers have filed a lawsuit against the Brave browser developer, accusing it of scraping content without permission for use by AI and allowing users to bypass publishers' paywalls.
The operators of the New York Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, and the Orlando Sentinel allege in their complaint that Brave profits by providing paid access to AI companies to index web pages, which can then be used to train models or respond to user queries. The complaint also alleges that Brave provides copyrighted content to several AI companies, including Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI, and Cohere.
A New York Times spokesperson stated that the newspaper has repeatedly demanded that Brave cease its infringing activities. Brave did not immediately respond to requests for comment at the time of publication.
