[South Korea to Impose 11% Tax on Profits from US Stock Perpetual Contracts on Overseas Exchanges Starting Next Year]
According to Odaily Planet Daily, South Korea's Ministry of Finance and Economy has decided to classify perpetual contracts linked to US stocks as overseas stock derivatives and include them in the scope of capital gains tax. Starting next year, profits earned by South Korean investors through overseas cryptocurrency exchanges on such products will be taxed at an 11% rate, after deducting a basic deduction of 2.5 million won per annum. This tax rate is half of the 22% tax rate for overseas spot stocks.
US stock perpetual contracts are traded on overseas cryptocurrency exchanges such as Binance, tracking US stocks such as Nvidia, Apple, and Tesla. Because the South Korean Financial Services Commission has not permitted perpetual contracts, South Korean investors can only participate through overseas exchanges. Data shows that from January to August this year, the trading volume of such products on 19 global exchanges was approximately $1 trillion. The South Korean government plans to collect relevant trading records of investors on overseas exchanges and levy taxes accordingly.
