Samsung Electronics Plans to Completely Exit 8-inch Wafer Foundry Business by the End of 2030, Shifting to 12-inch Advanced Processes. According to a report by South Korean semiconductor media The Elec on November 2nd, Samsung Electronics has decided to completely cease 8-inch wafer foundry production by the end of 2030 and has informed its customers of the plan. This is the first time Samsung has explicitly stated the final exit timeline for this business, and the company plans to concentrate its personnel and equipment investments on 12-inch wafer advanced processes. Since this year, Samsung Electronics has stopped accepting new product orders for 8-inch wafer foundry services, involving mature processes from 65 to 180 nanometers, primarily for display driver chips, power management chips, and image sensors. The report points out that South Korean foundries such as DB HiTek and SK Keyfoundry are facing capacity shortages, and existing customers are facing challenges such as order transfers, product re-verification, and increased production costs.
