[Bank of Korea Investigates Virtual Asset Business Layout and Risks of Banks and Securities Firms] According to Yonhap News Agency, on November 2nd, the Bank of Korea issued a survey on October 23rd to 18 banks, including KB, Shinhan, Hana, Woori, and NH Agricultural Cooperative, and 13 securities firms, regarding their entry into the virtual asset market. The deadline for responses was November 4th. The survey covered each institution's virtual asset organization and budget, business progress, core motivations for entering the market, investment amounts in related domestic and foreign companies, and risk assessment and response measures. The survey also included stress scenarios, such as the suspension of operations of Korea's largest virtual asset exchange due to a large-scale hacking attack, a sharp drop in the price of Bitcoin and other assets with continued shrinking trading volume, and the impact of other financial institutions suffering significant losses due to similar incidents. The Bank of Korea intends to use the results as internal reference material to address the trend of gradually incorporating virtual assets into the regulatory system. The bank's Financial Stability Report released in June also warned of the need to pay attention to the impact of virtual asset price fluctuations on the supply and demand of stocks and foreign exchange. A Bank of Korea official stated that the growth prospects of the virtual asset market remain valid, and the financial industry is also paying attention to this area for the purpose of expanding new businesses and attracting customers. This investigation aims to identify potential risks in advance.
