Signs of 2026 Peak in Gold Could Trickle Down
Gold is typically the best-performing commodity over time and may have set an enduring high in 2026, with trickle-down implications. My quarter-century graphic highlights the precious metal outpacing copper and Brent crude, with the latter potentially poised to surpass its highest-ever year-end close of $111.11 a barrel in 2012. Silver's surge above $100 an ounce in 1Q and purge to roughly $49 on Oct. 30 reflects a common pattern in commodities that go up too much. It could be a precursor of what to expect in crude and petroleum, which are being replaced by technology linked to silver and copper.
What's notable from my graphic, and what might matter most for commodities in 2027, is the S&P 500 at its highest vs. US public debt since 2001. This ratio has had a direct link to gold and appears to be pulling copper along. If stocks wobble, it may be a top deflationary force for commodities.
