The $6.3 billion Binance theft, but more concerning than the loss itself is the issue of trust within the entire cryptocurrency industry.
I've been following the Binance theft closely these past few days. From the initial market panic to the gradual resumption of withdrawals, there are certainly many things to consider.
According to the latest announcement, Binance has recovered approximately 95% of the affected assets and has begun a phased resumption of withdrawals.
Taking this opportunity, I'd like to share a few of my own thoughts:
1/ For exchanges, security is always paramount.
No matter how large or technologically advanced an exchange is, it can still be attacked. However, ensuring the safety of user assets remains the most fundamental responsibility of any platform.
Binance's commitment to cover all losses through the SAFU Fund and company funds, and its rapid recovery of a large amount of assets, is commendable and demonstrates the strength of a leading exchange.
I hope Binance's subsequent technical review will provide more security experience for the entire industry and drive further improvements in exchange security mechanisms.
2/ Crisis management is most importantly about providing users with certainty.
It's completely understandable that users panicked after such a major security incident.
I believe good crisis management should at least achieve three things:
- Don't shy away from the issues, clearly define who will bear the losses
- Continuously disclose progress to reduce unnecessary speculation
- Provide solutions and deliver on promises with action
Binance's handling of this crisis has been relatively proactive, from promising compensation and continuously replenishing assets to pushing for the resumption of withdrawals.
Especially the "Queen," who, despite being pregnant, worked through the night with the team to handle this crisis; it was truly admirable.
3/ For KOLs, traffic should not supersede facts
What has struck me most these past few days is the behavior of some self-media and KOLs.
Some diligently tracked on-chain data and verified information, while others, for the sake of traffic, spread unverified screenshots and rumors as facts.
I think criticizing Binance is perfectly fine; a platform experiencing such a major security incident should be subject to oversight.
But criticism and spreading rumors are two different things.
Especially in events involving large amounts of user assets, a single false message can amplify panic and even influence ordinary people's judgment.
Content creators all want traffic, myself included, but some traffic really shouldn't be earned.
The greater the influence of a KOL, the greater their responsibility for the accuracy of information.
4/ For ordinary people, don't entrust your asset security entirely to any single platform.
Even leading exchanges like Binance can experience security incidents, reminding us to manage our personal assets carefully.
Don't concentrate all your funds on one platform. Protect your account security, and consider diversifying your long-term holdings.
Especially in times like these, be wary of fake announcements, phishing links, and scams impersonating customer service.
Often, hackers target exchanges, but scammers may be targeting ordinary people like us.
5/ For the entire cryptocurrency industry, what truly needs repair is trust.
We often discuss how high BTC can rise, which sectors will explode, and when the next bull market will arrive.
But for ordinary people outside the crypto space, they might only care about three questions:
Is it safe to put my money in there?
If the platform has problems, will anyone take responsibility?
In case of a crisis, can I still withdraw my money normally?
If these problems remain unresolved, even the best technology and the largest market size will struggle to reassure more people to participate.
Binance's ability to absorb such a massive loss demonstrates the strength of a leading platform, but the entire industry cannot rely solely on the financial strength of exchanges to bail out losses.
The future requires more robust security mechanisms, more transparent asset reserves, and more efficient security collaboration across the industry.
After all, the next attack may not be on a large exchange capable of handling billions of dollars in losses.
Finally, I believe Binance's actions in taking responsibility and pushing for recovery should be commended, and I hope @cz_binance and @heyibinance can turn this incident into an opportunity to advance industry security.
An exchange's ability to afford $6.3 billion in losses demonstrates its strength.
The direction the entire industry should strive for is to ensure users never experience such panic again.
