This is unbelievable! Hackers stole $6.3 billion from Binance, rehearsing their attacks with just a few dollars at a time before actually carrying it out.
Around 4 AM the day before yesterday, over $6 billion was transferred from Binance wallets across at least four blockchains, potentially the largest cryptocurrency theft in history.
Before this, the attackers had been using Ethereum accounts under their control to test-run malware, spending just a few dollars at a time, to ensure it worked before actually launching their attack.
The first to notice something amiss was Binance's co-CEO, @heyibinance, who noticed the anomaly while browsing cryptocurrency.
Binance subsequently assembled a multinational emergency response team of about 100 people, working with security companies and law enforcement to recover the money. Currently, approximately $3 billion is frozen on-chain.
Binance has promised to cover the remaining shortfall with its own funds, with users bearing no loss.
While the company is covering the losses, some employees are reportedly worried: with such a large sum going down the drain, will their year-end bonuses still be paid as usual?
A $6.3 billion incident, and for ordinary employees, their biggest concern is still their year-end bonus—how true!
A Binance spokesperson responded: It is not expected to be affected.
