[AI Claude's parent company is going public] First-half revenue of $16.3 billion, but a net loss of $80.7 billion – ticker symbol ANT, valuation proposed at $1.5-2 trillion
Anthropic has filed its S-1 petition with the SEC, and Nasdaq plans to use the ticker symbol ANT. This isn't just another fundraising press release; it's laying bare its financials to the market.
Let's start with the numbers, don't be scared off: First-half revenue was approximately $16.29 billion, compared to $1.16 billion in the same period last year, an increase of almost 14 times. The net loss was $80.7 billion – sounds like a collapse, but about $72.4 billion of that is from fair value changes in convertible bonds and SAFE, non-cash items. Operatingly, there was a loss of $693 million in the first half; according to their own adjustments, the first half saw their first operating profit of approximately $1.6 billion, with a profit margin of about 10%, and operating cash flow also turned positive to about $3.9 billion. Q2 is even more glaring: 5.6 billion computing power was spent in exchange for $11.6 billion in revenue, roughly $2.08 in revenue for every dollar of computing power. However, there are also many thorns: The seven co-founders, holding 50.1% of the voting rights in Class F, still have the final say on the direction even after the IPO. The top five customers accounted for about a quarter of the revenue in the first nine months; nearly half of the revenue came through the cloud marketplaces of Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. The risk factors section was over ninety pages long, ranging from reliance on major customers to "existential risks," and they even admitted that about 5% to 7% of this year's revenue was later found to be due to customer misconduct. By the end of September, the company had about 5,300 employees, and some had already publicly resigned, criticizing the industry for gambling with their lives.
Market-wise: Rumors circulate about a valuation of $1.5 to $2 trillion, with a target IPO around Thanksgiving week; the roadshow is rumored to start around November 9th. These past few days, there's been talk about large computing power orders shifting towards SpaceX, and the Blackstone chip deal being warned of potentially high junk status—revenue is soaring, and so is capital expenditure.
What does this mean for you? For Claude users, this provides another barometer of whether the company will continue investing heavily in training; some in the crypto world are already using the ANT narrative to generate buzz; and considering OpenAI's merging of ChatGPT and Codex quotas and reduction of its fundraising target from 30 billion to approximately 20 billion—while rushing to go public, fundraising is becoming increasingly difficult, and the script for the two AI giants is starting to fork.
My opinion: 16.3 billion in revenue is truly impressive, and the 80.7 billion in book losses needs to be analyzed in detail, but a valuation of over 1.5 trillion is betting on "AI becoming as ubiquitous as water and electricity," not "making enough money now." With dual-class share structures and reliance on the cloud market, retail investors should ask themselves before buying: are you buying the model or the founder's voting rights?
Do you think ANT is worth 1.5 trillion, or is the valuation story overblown? Take your side in the comments.
