Some users have asked: if Kim Jong-un is ultimately confirmed to be responsible for the Binance theft, how did the stolen cryptocurrency end up as assets for him?
Based on the Bybit theft and previous cases announced by the US, Kim Jong-un likely used overseas intermediaries to exchange the cryptocurrency, which was then used by overseas companies to make payments and purchases on behalf of North Korea.
After approximately $1.5 billion was stolen from Bybit in 2025, the FBI identified North Korea's TraderTraitor as the perpetrator. A later report from the Multinational Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT) stated that as of April 2025, a Hong Kong intermediary had assisted in liquidating over $100 million of the stolen Bybit assets.
The report also mentioned that an intermediary in Russia assisted in exchanging at least $60 million in crypto assets, including some of the stolen Bybit funds. North Korean personnel also utilized Cambodian networks to prepare for liquidation elsewhere.
Based on information provided by member countries, MSMT estimates that by September 2025, the stolen Bybit funds have likely been fully liquidated.
An earlier case involves the US Treasury Department's 2023 indictment alleging that North Korean bank representatives processed stolen cryptocurrency through over-the-counter dealers in China and Hong Kong. These companies then used fiat currency to purchase tobacco, communication equipment, and other goods for North Korea.
In other words, for Kim Jong-un, as long as someone overseas was willing to accept the stolen cryptocurrency, facilitate settlements, and purchase the goods he needed, the stolen cryptocurrency could become real purchasing power.
On-chain analytics firm Elliptic believes the recent attack on Binance is likely related to North Korea's TraderTraitor, with some of the stolen Binance funds flowing through the same wallet as the previously stolen Bitget funds.
Therefore, in reality, the main facilitators of the cryptocurrency transactions for Kim Jong-un were Russian and Chinese (this isn't my opinion).
