A publicly traded company specializing in "AI + digital assets" is seeking an outlet for its Bitcoin holdings.
Nasdaq-listed Next Technology Holding (NXTT) announced on October 30th at 7:20 PM EST (October 31st at 7:20 AM Beijing time): The board of directors unanimously agreed to sell or pledge approximately 5,833 BTC in batches. Three methods are available: direct sale to exchanges, block trades, and pledging for financing. The timing, price, and quantity will be determined by the CEO.
Based on Coinbase's BTC price of $77,566 at 9:04 AM Beijing time on November 1st, this batch of coins is worth approximately $452 million.
The announcement cited three reasons: the recent security incident at Binance, exchange and hacker risks, and the potential impact of quantum computing on cryptography. The same announcement also stated that the company's Bitcoin is not held on Binance.
In my opinion, the part worth reading carefully isn't the "sell," but the word "staking." The announcement's own risk warning states: collateral requirements, margin calls, and forced liquidation. Using staking to reduce the risk of holding cryptocurrency essentially replaces custody risk with liquidation risk.
The announcement also states that there are no guarantees regarding whether a transaction will be completed, at what price, or when. What's worth monitoring going forward is subsequent disclosures and the actual activity of on-chain addresses, not the authorization itself.
